PORT OF TALLINN

BASE FOR BALTIC FLEET (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 6. Tallinn, the capital of liberated Estonia, whose peace-time population of 138,000 has been halved, is now preparing after three years of‘German occupation to play a key role as the main base of the Baltic Red Fleet in the Battle of the Baltic, says Reuter’s correspondent at Tallinn. The town and port are so shattered that it is estimated it will take two years to reconstruct it. Nearly half the houses have been destroyed or need repair. Estonia’s agriculture has suffered greatly from enemy occupation. The country’s cattle herds have been halved, and only one-third of the pigs remain.

Judged from conversations with the inhabitants, a number of Tallinn residents have not been convinced of the advantages of being incorporated in the Soviet Union, and a number left voluntarily with the Germans. Other groups of residents who are reported to be hostile to the Soviet Union have departed to settle in France, Sweden and Finland.
