DRIVE FOR ARNHEM

BRITISH SECOND ARMY LIMITED OBJECTIVES SOUGHT LONDON, Oct. 5. British Second Army forces in Southeast Holland began a new drive for Arnhem at 11 a.m. to-day. Very stiff fighting is now going on two miles south of Arnhem bridge. The Associated Press correspondent says, the attack was launched on a six-mile front, but stiff opposition limited the advance to about one mile, and one prong gained only a few yards. General progress was made by other troops south of Tilburg. One thrust is being made north-east of Arnhem and one south-east in a combined offensive to reach the line of -the Pannerdensch Canal, while a third attack is being made west from our salient towards Tilburg. The north-east drive north of Nijmegen has reached Elden, only two miles from the south bank of the Neder Rhine at Arnhem.
