SHARP THREAT TO ENEMY

CANADIANS’ DRIVE

DUTCH FRONTIER CROSSED

(United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) . (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 6. The Canadian drive north of Antwerp is sharply threatening the Germans’ positions in the estuary of the Scheldt. The Canadians have crossed the Dutch frontier at one point and are also pouring over the St. Leonard Canal. German forces caught in a pocket on the south bank of the Scheldt were attacked at dawn to-day. Polish, British, and Canadian troops are closely threatening the two Dutch industrial towns of Tilburg and Bredk. British units were last reported within three miles of. Tilburg, while the Poles are pushing steadily up the road to Breda. ■ . There was fierce local fighting yesterday 12 miles west of Arnhem, where a determined enemy thrust drove the British back 1000 yards, but a counter-attack completely restored the position and inflicted 200 casualties on the enemy. Near Oveloon three German counters were held. American troops engaged in fierce battles north of Aachen have pressed forward one mile and a-half past Übach, but the opposition continues to be tough, and the enemy is putting up a heavy artillery and mbrtar barrage. The truce at Dunkirk has ended, and the Allied attack has been resumed. Fighter-bombers opened the assault by pounding enemy positions inside the port. A total of 19,900 civilians was evacuated during the truce.
