BOWLING CLUB RATES

EXEMPTION NOT RECOMMENDED At the last meeting of the City Council a deputation was received from the Otago Provincial Council of Sport asking for exemption, wholly or in part, of bowling clubs from the payment of rates. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee, and in its report, to .be submitted to .the council on Monday night, the committee states that it is unable to recommend that exemption should . be granted. The committee states that the question had been considered on several occasions, and it expressed the opinion that, as a matter of principle, exemptions from rating should not, be widened, but should be kept within the narrowest possible limit. ‘Applications for such exemptions . have tended to increase sharply within recent years,” the report says, “and it is certain that, if all were granted, a substantial additional burden would be cast on the general body of ratepayers. In the present case the committee considers that it would not be possible to justify any rating exemption to bowling clubs without extending the same relief to all recreational clubs, numbering 26, which pay rates. The committee is unable to recommend such a course." . .
