Concerning a Cat A very pleasantly-produced story for children is Baggie and His Famous Cat Tam, from the Progressive Publishing Society (2s 6d). It tells how an old window-cleaner adopts a kitten which as it grows to maturity becomes his constant companion, and wins fame by warning its master of an earthquake impending, thus saving his life. The text is perhaps inferior in quality to the format of the little book. It is illustrated in line with some skill by Nancy Bolton. Prayer at Sea __ Writing from H.M.N.Z.S. Tamaki, G. M. McKenzie in The Navy’s Prayer (Presbyterian Bookroom, ■ Christchurch) discusses inspirationally the significance of Bishop Sanderson’s prayer, composed in the 17th century, for use in the ships of his Majesty. He concludes: “ It’s the ship that counts. There is a spirit of sacrificial service in the navy that we have every right to be proud of. How much of that spirit comes from the navy’s daily prayers, only God can ever know. But we do well to bear in mind that old saying: ‘That ship sails the surest which, is driven with the breath of goodly men’s prayers.’” The Parents’ Part
“We speak of a New Order. Nobody seems to think a New Order will be much use unless it is a Christian Order, and there can of course be no Christian Order without Christians.’ This excerpt from Molly D. Whitelaw s Challenge (Duckworth, Blenheim, Is fid) indicates the argument of her little book. It is directed. especially, in simple and forceful language, to the mothers of New Zealand, who have failed to accept their full responsibilities as confessed by the franchise; but can fail in their homes to .inculcate proper moral principles in the young only at the national peril.
