CARGO PILLAGING

A case of pillaging from a package of silk goods was reported by the Polytechnic, Oamaru, yesterday morning. Seven pieces of plain silk were removed from the package during transit from Home, but the pieces of floral design, being more easily traced, were not interfered with. Mr R. Brown recalled that during the last war period two lengths of serge were removed from a case sent from Home, and in their stead were placed two stones from a wall. This case was investigated, being traced by the authorities back to England, where a visit was made to the carrier's home, and two stones were discovered to be missing from a wall. The explanation was that the carrier had deliberately gone down late to the docks, receiving a chit to say they were closed. He had then taken the case to, his home, where he bad ample time, to remove the pieces of serge and replace them with the stones.
