GAOL FOR FALSE PRETENCES LONDON, Oct. 5.
Lord Langford, aged 60, the New Zealand-born Ipsh peer, was sentenced to hard labour fer terms totalling a year for false pretences. The prosecuting : counsel said Lord Langford produced a copy of a letter purporting to ceme from the King. The prosecution described the letter as a forgery. \ ■ Lord Langford pleaded guilty to three charges of obtaining sums of £35, £45, and £6O from Mrs Gwendoline Makin, of Farnham. He asked that 11 other charges should be taken into consideration. Lord Langford obtained the money from Mrs Makin by telling- her •that he was in receipt of £SOO annually from the Privy Purse for services rendered to King Edward VII. Later he produced a copy of a letter .signed “George, R. 1.” He said he had received it from the king, inviting, him to the palace and suggesting that he should make an appointment for a discussion on a job which was offered, in' the letter.
