In five starts this season Max Baer has won twice and finished second twice. He will have a big following in his race at Timaru next Saturday. When Nancy Hanks in 1892 trotted to records of 2min' 9sec, 2min 32sec, 2min 53sec and, finally, to 2min 4sec, she .was hitched to a sulky weighing 621 b. «■ One of the matters to be considered at the Trotting Conference is a motion framed with the object of making it compulsory for all clubs to include a renomination clause on their programmes. Miss Spear, who was foaled in 1911 and had her first foal in New Zealand in 1918, recently had a winning representative in Australia in Admiral Nelson. His dam, Black Spear, was got by Wilbur Lou— Joan Spear, by Nelson Bingen—Miss Spear. The Ascot course, on which, prior to the war, the Victoria Racing and Trotting Associations held meetings, may be divided up for a residential area. Light harness racing in Melbourne appears to be having a hard struggle for existence. During the first eight months of the present racing season, 108 days of racing and trotting were held, as .compared with 118 the previous year, and £327,987 was given in stakes, as against £273,863. The totalisator investments this season were £6,956,730, as compared with £5,988,355. The average stakes a day this season were just under £3037, as against just over £2354, and the totalisator investments averaged £64,474 each day, as compared with £50,749 last season.
