STILL ADVANCING

ALLIED ARMIES IN ITALY FRONT OF 100 MILES FROM ROME (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, June 18. Further advances have been made in Italy west of the Apennines in spite of the stiller German resistance. Eighth Army troops, pressing on from Foligno, are closing in on Perugia, and one report states that the outskirts of the city have already been reached. Perugia is 80 miles north-east of Rome. The Fifth Army has also made further advances, and has captured Grosseto, thereby eliminating the last important German stronghold before Pisa. Reuter’s correspondent at Allied headquarters stated that, according to captured documents, the Pisa-Rimini natural defence line has been named the Gothic Line. No organised defence lines south of this position have yet been located.

The whole Fifth Army front is now nearly 100 miles from Rome. Allied reconnaissance in the Adriatic sector without resistance reached the Vomano River, 22 miles north of the Pescara River. German tanks-were seen only in scattered groups. Enemy resistance in the air is merely trifling.
