FOURTH AWARD

PALMERSTON AIRMAN MISSING ON OPERATIONS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 16. According to advice received by the Air Department, one of the most decorated pilots of this war, Acting Wing Commander James Fraser Barron, D. 5.0., D.F.C., D.F.M., R.N.Z.A.F., of Palmerston, has been awarded a bar to the D.S.O. The citation states that one night last month Wing Commander Barron participated in an attack on an airfield at Nantes. By his appreciation of the responsibilities entrusted to him and the skill and precision with which he executed his attack, he contributed in a large measure to the success achieved. Since being .awarded the D.S.O. he has taken part in many attacks on dangerous ana difficult targets. “He is an outstanding captain, whose example, skill, bravery, and determination have impressed all.” the citation adds. Wing Commander Barron’s parents are Mr and Mrs James Barron, of Palmerston.

According to cabled advice received by his parents late in May, Wing Commander Barron has been reported missing on air operations. Wing Commander Barron, who is 23 years of age, was recently on a third tour of operations, flying a Lancaster bomber, as a pathfinder. Up to April 5 he had completed 73 raids. He rose flight sergeant to wing commander in 23 months.
