SHIPWRECK RELIEF

SOCIETY’S ANNUAL REPORT

The annual report of the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand states that, despite the war situation, no serious shipping disaster occurred during the year, and the only claims made on the funds of the society were by the crew of the trawler Hananui. The sum of £2B was expended in affording relief to the crew of this vessel.

“ Whilst the claims of the society have been particularly light during the past year, it is felt.,’’ the report says, “ that the public recognises the benefit of having a society in a position to afford immediate relief should a serious shipping disaster occur. Since the formation of the society in 1902 the sum of £18,733 has been distributed by way of relief to passengers and crews, and special donations, and it is the prompt manner in which this relief has been afforded that has been so greatly appreciated. It is recognised that the merchant navy is playing an heroic part in the Empire’s war effort, and it is only right that funds should be available to assist those who are playing such a noble part should they meet a shipping disaster.”
