WOOLLEN GARMENTS

NAVY AND AIR FORCE NEEDS

A letter was received at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Patriotic Committee from the Otago branch of the Navy League in reference to the supply of woollen garments for the services. It was' stated that, besides a monthly provision of 173 garments for the naval stores, Wellington, the regular district consignment of naval woollens for overseas and comforts for overseas merchant marine crews, coastal command men, and minesweepers, a blue bag was issued to each man leaving for service with the Royal New Zealand Navy or Fleet Air Arm. This was handed over at the final port of embarkation, and the Otago (including North Otago) blue bag contained a polo pullover, scarf, balaclava, pair cf mittens, pair of gloves, two pairs of socks, and a pair of ssa boot stockings. Eighty bags were required every month. Advice was also received from the Society of Air Force Relations that all airmen going to- Canada or England were issued with a scarf, balaclava, and mittens before leaving their final station. Woollens were not needed in the Pacific zone. All men were issued by Air Force Relations with a pullover when going into camp. The khaki patriotic woollen gifts were now issued direct to the men by the army, so that all servicemen’s relatives could rest assured that, so far as woollen comforts for their men were concerned, the steady knitting of the womenfolk and the work of the organisations behind them resulted in every man in every service being well provided for with warm woollen gifts.
