MONEY AND ECONOMIC SECURITY

Sir.—Social credit propagandists have, in your columns and elsewhere, been unsparing in their denunciation of the blindness, and even treachery, of our present administration in financial matters. Today “Another Financier” writes: Labom will never learn that it could make . . . the worker and the farmer infinitely more prosperous if it would . . . take control of the issuing and retiring of money. ’ Is it not. then, a' strange anomaly that such immense benefit is promised from the entrusting to these unreliable hands of the delicate current adjustments of commercial finance? Surely it is a merciful deliverance that a consummated social credit policy has not landed us even now in this inauspicious predicament! Government control would have to do with actual Governments, not ideal ones.— I am, etc., Critic. Dunedin, June 14.

Sir,—Your correspondent “ Notso Softski ” has evidently looked here, there, and everywhere for truth with little success. Perhaps he has not adopted tne correct attitude. In'-the search for truth it is as necessary to consider where tne other fellow might be right as to prove him wrong. Social creditors are certainly strong on individual initiative, but gross egotism posing as rugged individuality is another matter. The very idea of the national dividend, to give to all their share in our common cultural inheritance, shows where they stand in relation to society. This share belongs to each and every individual, and there is no pauperism. State or otherwise, about it. Whether the Socialist or the rugged individualist dominates in “ Notso Softski’s ” dual personality, he must recognise that the common cultural inheritance, like sunlight and air, is the gift of God —or Nature if he so prefers. He asks how we are to do this or that without planning. In the course of his studies he must surely have come across the two meanings of this word. Planning within his own organisation by the producer who lays his product before his customers in the hope that they will buy. and that other sinister

planning of thh dictator, who says, “ This is what my experts consider suitable (for you; take it or go without. The social credit proposals are made to allow or money being used as a ticket system for the orderly production, distribution, and consumption of the goods required within a democratic framework, that is, without copying the methods of the dictators. " Notso • Softski ” is like a mechanic amusing himself by trying to see.the purpose of a machine by monkeying with this or that part. No doubt quite a 10l of amusement can be got by that method On the other hand, he is not likely tc understand the mechanism of any machinerv, economic or otherwise, until he understands the purpose and considers the mechanism in relation to its object— I am, etc., A. G. M. Dunedin, June 14.
