Mr James Begg left for Wellington by the express yesterday. Mr Mark Silverstone left yesterday for Wellington. Mr A. C. Lalng was a passenger for Christchurch by the express yeste'-day. Mr J. Henderson left for Wellington yesterday. Mr J. Caradus, Registrar-general of Land In Wellington, has been appointed Commissioner of Stamp Duties and Secretary Eor Lands and Deeds.
Captain George R. Chance, who until recently was on the Italian* front with the Eighth Army, has been appointed battery commander of the Anti-aircraft Training Depot in the Middle East. The sole nominee for the office of president of the New Zealand Council of Sport for the ensuing year is Mr W. A. Jenkins, of Dunedin, who is the present holder of that office, and also president of the Otago Provincial Council of Sport.
A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Major B. V. A. Jones, who has been killed on active service, was passed at the meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union last night. The president (Mr W. J. Pearson) said that Major Jones had been a prominent player for the University team, and had also been an Otago representative.
Passengers for the north by the airliner yesterday were Miss M. Cameron, Mr F.’ B. Adams, Mr 11, Brash, Mr H. Rowe, Mrs G. Donaldson, Mr L. J. Clutterbuck. Mr G. R. Brierley. and Mr Lamb for Wellington, Mr A. H. McLeod and Mr A. Gill for Auckland. Passengers who arrived bv the afternoon plane were Mr L. Rowe, Mr W. Cowdrey, and Flying Officer K. Lawry from Auckland. Mr C. F. Fowler Mr J. H. Gillies. Mr R. T. Fraser, Mr' Jack Lock. Mr W. A. Murdoch, Dr M. Falconer, and Captain R. L. Costine from Wellington. Mr J. G. Cobbe was the guest at a representative gathering at Feilding on Saturday night arranged in recognition of his public services extending over 50 years. Mr Cobbe received a massive silver tea and coffee service, engraved with words of appreciation. Mr T. L. Seddon (the Mayor) presided, and the speakers included Mr J. Hodgens, M.P. (representing the Government), Mr S. G. Holland (Leader of the Opposition), Mr M. 11. Oram (M.P. for Manawatu), Mr L. T. McLean (chairman of the Kiwitea County Council). Mr A. B. Shannon (chairman of the Oroua County Council), and Mr D. Mclnnes (president of the Chamber of Commerce). • *
