OBITUARY

MR C. B. PLUMMER (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 8. A notable figure in Auckland musical circles, Mr Charles Bernard Plummer, president of the Auckland Choral Society and chairman of the Operatic Society, died this morning, aged 74. He had been an active figure in the musical life of Auckland for more than half a century, and was working on a musical history of ,the Dominion, for which enterprise he was singularly qualified. In business Mr Plummer* was a director of the Plummer Hat Company. He was a keen bowler and a member of the Masonic Lodge. MRS HERBERT HOOVER (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Jan. 8. The death has occurred of Mrs Herbert Hoover, wife of ex-President Hoover; aged 68. WILLIAM, K. VANDERBILT (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 8. The death is announced of Mr William Kissam Vanderbilt, the director of a number of United States companies; aged 66. SIR ARTHUR N. HILL (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 8. The death is reported of Sir Arthur Norman Hill, the noted authority on shipping, aged 81.

Sir Arthur Hill, who was created a baronet In 1919, was chairman of the Board of Trade Advisory Committee on Merchant Shipping from 1907 to 1937, and was the British delegate to the Interhational Conference for the Safety of Life at Sea in 1913-14 and in 1929. He was vice-president of the Chamber of Shipping in 1924, and was the Britisn delegate at the Economic Conference at Geneva in May. 1927.
