AXIS SMUGGLING
MEASURES FOR PREVENTION (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 4. Further measures taken to prevent the Axis from smuggling small quantities of precious material through intermediatory passengers and personnel of neutral vessels, particularly Spanish, occasioned a visit to the contraband control base at Gibraltar by Mr Dingle Foot, parliamentary secretary of economic warfare. Mr Foot returned to Britain after spending a week at Gibraltar, and was accompanied by Mr Fiefler, head of the economic warfare, division of the United States Embassy. Collaboration between the two Governments in this particular branch of the war effort is very close.
