OFFER BY BUTCHERS

PRICES ON 54s BASIS

A statement setting out the position of the. butchers was made last night by Mr J. Sinton, president of the Dunedin Master Butchers’ Association. “The executive of the association realises that the farmer cannot produce fat cattle at the price on which the Government has based our retail prices,” he said, “ and in an endeavour to keep faith with the public we are offering 54s for prime beef, which is 6s per 1001 b (approximately Id per lb) more than the prescribed basic wholesale rate.” Mr Sinton added that the butchers were doing their best in the way of a compromise until a propter understanding could be reached by all the parties 'concerned. In the meantime, supplies to the public might be somewhat restricted.
