Mr C. H. Trask, formerly assistant district traffic manager in Dunedin, who has been appointed district traffic manager at. Invercargill, will take up his new duties to-day.

Mr G. A. Bain, who has been headmaster at the Otaulau School for the past 16 months, has been transferred to a similar position at Dunsandel, Canterbury. His successor is Mr Bews, of Miller's Flat.

Advice has been received by Mrs D. C. Duff, of Driver street, that her husband, Flying Officer Duff, is a prisoner of war in Java. Nothing bad been heard of Flying Officer Duff since early in 1942, when he was serving with the Royal Air Force at Singapore. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner on Saturday were Miss N. Guthrie for Christchurch, Mr H. Vernon, Colonel Hart, and Mr A. T. Bruce for Wellington, Mr Smillie for Palmerston North. Lieutenant-commander J. Brown and Mr H. Bovver for Auckland. After nearly 41 years’ service with the department.. Mr 11. H. Sharp, inspecting engineer of the Public Works Department. recently retired on superannuation. Mr Sharp entered the department's service in 1902, and in 190(5 took charge of the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway at Seddon. After holding other appointments, he became d ; strict engineer in Wellington, and in 1920 he was promoted to staff engineer at head office, and an inspecting engineer in 1924. On the occasion of his retirement tributes were paid to his ability and to his successful relations with members of the staff, by the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department (Mr W. L. Newnham), and by representatives of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers.
