PURCHASE OF HOUSES
LOSS OF DEPOSITS BY SERVICEMEN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. The Minister of Rehabilitation, Mr C F.- Skinner, said to-day that he was telegraphing to Mr A. P. Postlewaite, president of the Auckland executive of the R.S.A., asking for particulars of the servicemen who have lost their deposits on house purchases. The Minister warned ex-servicemen desiring to purchase homes to communicate with the local Rehabilitation Committee before doing anything. He said that rehabilitation officers would be appointed overseas and on the hospital ships to advise returning men.
At a meeting of the Auckland R.S.A. on Friday Mr Postlewaite said that some servicemen who had paid deposits, in some cases amounting to £IOO, on house purchase deals which had fallen through owing to the necessary loan not having been obtained from the State Advances Corporation, had lost their money. He added that m one case the deposit lost by the servicemen was all the money he had saved to buy a home.
