BATTLE IN DARKNESS

TWO GALLANT AUSTRALIANS

SIXTEEN JAPANESE KILLED (N.Z.P.A. Special Aust. Correspondent) (Rec. 11.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 16. Two Western Australian A.I.F. infantrymen killed 16 Japanese with their bayonets in a wild 10-minute melee fought in heavy rain and pitch darkness at an advance outpost on Mount Tambu (New Guinea). Among the Japanese dead were found a lieutenant and two sergeants. The two Australians were alone in their outpost when the Japanese sneaked up close and then rushed the position, firing and throwing grenades. The Australians determined not to reveal themselves by returning the fire, but dashed into the attackers with their bayonets, and the Japanese turned and fled. In the morning 16 bodies were counted.
