MILTON

Borough Council.—At the monthly meeting of the Milton Borough Council on Wednesday night there were present the Mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn), Crs P. W. Gray, R. Price, G. Melville, I. W. Lee, J. Anderson J. W. Keogh, H. Wilson, and A. Sellars.—Mr A. Littlejohn reported on the condition of the Coronation Hall. He said there was a considerable amount ol' loose plaster, and the brickwork along the front was in need of urgent attention. He recommended 'that immediate action should be taken. It was decided to defer action in the matter until the weather became more favourable. —In reply to the council’s request that a traffic inspector should reside permanently in Milton, the chief traffic inspector notified that the principal difficulty was housing, and that there was little likelihood of a change at present.—The Municipal Association requested the council s opinion on the holding of a conference next year, and it was decided to support the proposal for a conference. — The Commissioner of Transport forwarded a copy of the amended regulations providing for the free issue of drivers’ licences to the members of the forces on furlough.—ln his report, the traffic inspector suggested that the council should consider marking pedestrian crossings at the busy corners of the town, partly to accustom pedestrians to use them when they visited larger centres. —Cr Keogh drew attention to the road to the new maternity annex at the public hospital, and stated that inconvenience was caused by its being a one-way road. It was decided to approach the Hospital Board in the matter—Cr Price referred to the congestion often caused by allowing cars to be parked in Abercrombie street, which was narrow. He moved that the street be declared a prohibited parking area, but the motion was lost by five votes to four. Methodist Ladies’ Guild—Mrs Cockerill presided over a large attendance at a meeting of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Prout, president of the Missionary Union, gave an interesting address on the work of the missionaries in the Solomon Islands up to the time of the outbreak of war with Japan. Solos were sung by Mrs Ruffel and the Rev. L. T. Norwell. Mrs C. Keinan was the accompanist. Salvation Army.—The fifty-ninth anniversary of the local Salvation Army corps was celebrated last week-end, when special meetings were conducted by Major Podmore, of Gore. On Monday night a concert was held under the direction of Major Bartlett, of Dunedin. A birthday cake, presented by the corps sergeant-major, was cut by Mrs Bartlett, who was corps officer in Milton some 20 years ago. Man-power Committee.—The Industrial Man-power Committee—Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), S. D. Macpherson, and H. H. Gillard—held a short sitting on Wednesday to hear an appeal by William Brown, baker, Milton, against the man-power officer’s decision in allowing R. Kennedy to terminate his employment with him.—The committee reserved its decision.
