Mr S. F. Chalmers returned from the north yesterday afternoon. Mr John Black was a passenger from the'north yesterday afternoon. Mr W. Nisbet, Dominion organiser of trade training, who has been visiting Dunedin, returned to Wellington yesterday.
The Commissioner of Works, Mr James Fletcher, left for Wellington by air yesterday. Mr F. L. Hitchens, secretary of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mr S. W. Gaspar, a member of the Rehabilitation Board, is visiting Dunedin. He will leave on Monday for Oamaru and Timaru.
Mr W. R. Sinclair, who has been attending the half-yearly meetings of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association and the New Zealand Press Association in Wellington, returned yesterday afternoon.
At the last meeting of the Green Island School Committee the chairman (Mr J. Boomer) extended a welcome to Mr W. J. Barham,' * who has taken up his duties as headmaster. Mr Barham has been headmaster of the Longburn School, near Palmerston North, for the past five years. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr H. A. Beauchamp, Mr E. E. Brood, Mr J. McLennan, and Mr J. Fletcher for Christchurch, Mr I. Pryor, Mr J. S. Land, Mr Hopkirk, and Mr N. Paiwai for Wellington, Mr W. C. Young, and Mr N. Paterson for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr W. Craig and Mr Scanlon from Auckland, Mr H. Palmer, Mr Phillips,, and Miss J. Tennent from Wellington, and Corporal W A. Morriss and Leading Aircraftman A. Pedlow from Christchurch.
At a valedictory social of First Church Choir, held on Thursday evening, eulogistic speeches were made concerning the outstanding musical service to First Church and to the city generally, of Mr and Mrs A. Walmsley. Tributes to their excellent and generous work were paid by Professor V. E. Galway, Professor T, D Adams, Mr Crosby Morris, and the Rev. W. A. Stevely. Mr C. Watson, choirmaster, and Miss J. Crawley expressed the appreciation of First Church Choir, and on behalf of members presented Mr and Mrs Walmsley with a travelling rug and mirror. Mr Walmsley has taken up a business appointment in Invercargill.
