RAILWAYMEN WELCOMED

A large gathering of railwaymen and friends met at • the Hillside Social Hall; on Saturday last to honour 22 Otago;* members of th'e locomotive section of the New Zealand Railway Operating Com-, panies who have returned after three \< years’ service in the Middle East. The ■Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, in a letter of apology for absence, eulogised the excellent work of the units under very, difficult and dangerous conditions.. Undoubtedly the Railway Operating Companies had made a name for themselves equal to that of the rest of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. A list of toasts was honoured, and a programme of enjoyable concert items was presented.
