DETROIT RACE RIOTS
STARTED BY FALSE RUMOUR NEW YORK, Aug. 11. The race riots In Detroit on June 21, In which 34 were killed and 800 injured, were not planned, not premeditated, and not inspired by subversive enemy influence. This is the finding of a committee which investigated the disturbances. The committee found that the looting and rioting followed several disconnected incidents, primarily provoked by a false rumour that whites had killed a coloured woman and her child. White and negro youths were the principal rioters, but both gangs lacked preconceived or premeditated organisation. Tire Census Bureau reveals that the negro population of cities and larger towns increased 23 per cent, in 1939-40 owing to the migration of nearly 1,000,000 workers from rural and small town areas The total negro population is now nearing 12,500,000. Atlantic City, with 24 per cent, negroes, has the highest proportion of any northern city.
