SIX POUNDS A BOTTLE
SLY-GROG SELLER’S PRICE FOR WHISKY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. A deal with a serviceman for a bottle of whisky at £6 resulted to-day in the third prosecution of Anthony James Hardy, aged 33, labourer and carpenter, for selling liquor without a licence. The magistrate did not heed the plea for a fine. That would not stop the practice, he said, but imprisonment might. The maximum penalty for a third offence was six months in gaol, and he imposed a term of three months with hard labour.
