ST. JOHN WOMEN’S WAR COMMITTEE
The monthly meeting of the St. John Women's War Committee, held on Tuesday, was presided over by Mrs A. A. Fairbairn. There was a good attendance. The following items of interest were contained in the conveners’ reports:— Sewing.—Mrs H. R. Paterson said that during the month 24 pairs of pyjamas. 13 dressing gowns, 1 dozen dysentery pads, and 15 flannel shirts had been despatched.
Knitting.—Mrs D, Smeaton gave the following list of goods sent forward:— Sixty-two pairs of socks, 3 pullovers, 2 cardigans, and 4 skull caps. Persons wishing to assist are asked to apply for wool at the St. John headquarters on Tuesdays between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m Wool for socks is in good supply, and the committee would welcome knitters.
ST. CLAIR WOMEN’S CLUB On Monday evening the ex-presidents of the St. Clair Women’s Club entertained the members with reminiscences tf the club’s activities since its inception in December, 1914. Miss A. McDougall, president in 1917 and again in 1935, read letters from the first two presidents —Mrs Oxford (1915) and Miss Booley, now of Melbourne (1916-19-21) —and after referring to Mrs Pope (1918) Introduced Mrs Wakefield Holmes (1922), who spoke of the continued success of the club. Mrs T. Fleming (1923) was the next speaker, followed by Mrs John Wilson (1927-28), Mrs R. H. Ombler (1931 and 1939). Mrs J. W. Thomson (1937). Mrs D. Paine (1938), Mrs Douglas Barton (1941), and Mrs H. Archbold (1942). Messages of greeting were also read from Mrs J B. Mclntyre (1930), Mrs O. P. Williams (1932-33), and Mrs D. A. Young (1940) Each speaker was presented with a shoulder spray of flowers by Mrs J. M. McLachlan, president of the club. An entertaining programme .followed. An original story was read by Miss McDougall, and Mrs Wakefield Holmes Spoke on “ Will Shakespeare.” Music by George Clutsam was presented by Mesdames Ombler and Barton, and the concluding item was a charade arranged by Mrs Archbold. Those taking part were Mesdames Thomson, Paine, Ombler, and Barton. Mrs C. Woodhouse, on behalf of the members, thanked the ex-presidents.
