INDEPENDENT GROUP

MR HOLLAND'S REPLY TO CHARGE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. In a telegram from the Independent Group to the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, the question was asked:' “ Can you deny that you have held discussions with the Leader of the Opposition?” Mr Holland has replied to the secretary of the Independent Group, Mr A. P. Harper, as follows:—“I desire to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of August 10, in which you inquire whether I have had discussions with myself. The answer is in the affirmative. Your comment that I am conniving in ‘ unadulterated totalitarianism’ is noted, and I may say that I did not expect from you a statement so unfair and untrue.” The Independent Group’s telegram to Mr Holland alleged that the two main political parties were attempting to place the Independents at a disadvantage by an abuse of the powers of government, and characterised this as “unadulterated totalitarianism.”
