Lieutenant-colonel J. F. Fuller and Mrs Fuller arrived last night from Wellington. Lieutenant-colonel Fuller is on furlough from the Middle East.

The Commissioner of Works, Mr James Fletcher, arrived yesterday afternoon by air from Auckland. He will meet the Otago Hospital Board this afternoon to discuss the board’s building proposals. A message from London states that advice has been received by his relatives that the Yorkshire and English test cricketer, Captain Hedley Verity, has been reported missing.

Mr Roy Mathews, manager of the New Zealand Railways Publicity and Outdoor Advertising Branch, arrived last night from Wellington. He will return north tomorrow.

A high-ranking officer of the United States Army, Major-general John H. Hester, is at present in Auckland for a rest and for the purpose of receiving hospital treatment. General Hester has been commanding an army formation in the South Pacific area.

A Press Association cable message from London states that Flight Lieutenant Colin Tapley, of Dunedin, who is a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, has married Mrs Patricia Lyon, widow of Mr John Lyon, and a daughter of Lady Hambro.

At the annual meeting of the Knox Church congregation last night tribute was paid to the valuable work carried out by Nurse J. Torrance, who recently retired after 23 years of service. On behalf of the members of the church, Sister Jean made a monetary presentation. At the Burnside sale yesterday reference was made to the death of Mr F. W. Buttle, who had been auctioneer and salesman for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., for Ihe past 20 years. Mr E. J. Doogue (on behalf of the auctioneers), Mr James Sinton (master butchers), and J. Murray (graziers) spoke of the high esteem in which Mr Buttle was held, and expressed sympathy with his relatives. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were: Mr C. Lane, Private P. W. Cure, Mr M. C. Henderson, and Dr Carmalt Jones for Christchurch, Mr C. J. Boyle, Mr J. Ward, and Lieutenant and Mrs A. J. Boag for Auckland, and Mr A. B. Paisley for 'Wellington. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were: Mr James Fletcher and Mrs J. Mercer from Auckland, Mr L. Cheyne, Mr M. O. Barnett, Mr L. F. Rowe, and Mr A. M. Scott from Wellington, Mr J. H. James. Mr V. Hopkins, and Mr A. H. Franklin from Christchurch. At Ihe annual conference of the Railway Officers’ Institute at Wellington, the following officers were elected:—President, Mr M. J. Forde (Wellington); vicepresidents, Messrs J. W. Shepherd (Auckland) and J. S. Roscoe (Christchurch); general treasurer, Mr G. R. Wilson (Wellington); Executive Committee—Messrs Cunningham, McKinley, Lynch, Gilmore (Traffic Branch), Renal (Stores), McClear.v (Maintenance), Martin (Locomotive), Trewern (Workshops), all of Wellington; auditors, Messrs G. M. Howatson and J. H. Wilson. Mr Forde was reappointed editor of the Advocate.

Appreciation of the efforts of Private F W. Guest as a lecturer in' prisoner-of-war camp 52 in Italy is expressed by the chairman of the Camp Educational Committee in a letter, a copy of which has reached Private Guest’s parents in Balclutha. The letter was written on the occasion of Private Guest’s transfer to another camp. It stated that he had lectured on economics, psychology, and logic in the camp, and had directed the studies of a number of students to their great advantage. Private Guest, who graduated M.A., LL.M., at the University of Otago, was, until his departure on active service, a lecturer in philosophy at the University. He was seriously wounded at Sidi Rezegh.
