SERVICE APPEALS
CASES REVIEWED The cases of men previously held on appeal were reviewed at a sitting yesterday of the No. XI Armed Forces Appeal Board. The chairman (Mr D. C. Cameron) presided, and associated with him were Messrs J. C. H. Somerville and W. R. Clarke. “ I have always been of the opinion that if a man feels he wants to fight, it should be his duty to do so,” said A. J. Lumsden, a sawyer, who opposed an appeal on his behalf by the Atlas Box Company. The reservist added (hat he was prepared to go, and that he was satisfied that his employers would be able to carry on without him. —The chairman informed Lumsden that his occupation was regarded as essential. —The appeal was adjourned sine die. Adjournments sine die were granted in the following appeals: National Mortgage and Agency Company, for W. R. G. Bain, A. Eckhold, H. V. Hanson, J. D. Hepburn, D. R. Millar, J. A. Sinclair (fishermen), William Williams (deck hand), B. F. Barr (assistant storeman); Palmer and Son, Ltd., for J. McGregor (quarry worker) and H. G. Bowen (crusherman); Atlas Box Company, for T. A. Walker (truck driver); S. F. Aburn, Ltd., for A. S. E. McFarlane (glass cutter); J. V. Pritchard (varnish worker); Douglas Barton, for W. B. Deaker (butcher); McLeod Bros., Ltd., for T. Hubard (casing worker); John Edmond, Ltd., for L. E. Routledge (accountant); United Insurance Company, for L. W. Edglnton (acting chief clerk). Adjournments were granted in the following appeals:—National Mortgage and Agency Company, for C. C. Armstrong, (fish factory manager), until September 30, to enable a replacement to be made if possible; Dr E. H. Williams, for Joyce Wilson, domestic (against service in the W. until October 31; Atlas Box Company, for P. D. Byrne and A. I. Day (boxmakers), until September. 30; Reilly s Central Produce Mart, for J. J. Reilly, to enable a replacement to be made.
Release from the air force was recommended in an appeal by Mrs S. J. Harborne, for S. J. Harborne, coppersmith. Release from the army was recommended in the case of J. Douglas, an architect, for whom Mrs A. J. H. Douglas appealed. Douglas was ordered to report to the man-power officer. In an appeal by the Glenroy Butchery for C. C. Madmson, a butcher, an extension of leave was granted until March 31. , . , An appeal by the National Mortgage and Agency Company for William Spence (fisherman) • was withdrawn. The following appeals were dismissed:— National Mortgage and Agency Company, for A. Mattingly (fish packer); Atlas Box Company, for D. J. W. Nicol (boxmaker), not to be called before September 30. The appeal of E. S. Wilson for P. C. Harvey, a clerk and typist (against service in the W.RiNiS.) was allowed.
