GIRLS IN SERVICES
TIME FOR REVIEW OF NUMBERS THE NEEDS OF INDUSTRIES (F.OP.R.) WELLINGTON, Aug, 10. “ The time has arrived when there should be a review of the numbers of girls required in the respective services,” said Hie Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, during consideration of the estimates of the National Service Department in the House bf Representatives to-night. The Prime Minister said he had no preconceived views on the matter, but it was necessary to be sure that the girls were employed where they were most useful at a time when the country was in need of man-power. The Prime Minister’s remarks were made following a complaint by Mr F. W. Doidge (Oppn., Tauranga) that the land girls were not receiving fair treatment compared with other girls in the services. Mr Fraser said that the girls on the land were doing as fine a national service as anyone, and steps were to be taken to try to increase their numbers. He would give them A 1 priority, for production was of such great importance at the present time. Whatever could be done to support these girls would be done. "It may be necessary,” the Prime Minister added, “ to review the respective importance of the various spheres our girls have gone into, but all of them have done a most creditable job.”
