TOWNS IN RHINELAND ATTACK IN GREAT STRENGTH (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 10. The R.A.F. last night bombed an important industrial centre in the Rhineland, the twin towns of Mannheim and Ludwigshaven. The Air Ministry states that the attack was made in great strength, and that the pilots report that huge fires were started. Mannheim, which is the second largest inland port in Germany and also an important centre of rail and road communications, was last attacked on April 16. The population of the twin towns is 450,000, and their factories are mainly concerned, with chemical production. Mosquito aircraft also attacked targets in the Ruhr. Two enemy planes were shot down in the night’s operations, which cost the R.A.F. nine bombers.
