CATALINA SQUADRON
NEW ZEALANDERS IN AFRICA tN.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug'. 8. A New Zealand Catalina squadron operating in West Africa has the names of provinces painted on either side of the hull. Instead of O for Orange or T for Tommy they are called O for Otago, T for Taranaki, A for Auckland, C for Canterbury, H for Hawke’s Bay, W for Wellington. Wing Commander D. W. Baird, A.F.C., the commanding officer, states that members of the crews of the aircraft come from various provinces, but the captains are not necessarily from the provinces painted on their aircraft, being mostly from Wellington and Otago.
