WOMEN IN THE SERVICES

A LOSS TO INDUSTRY APPEAL FOR EARLY REVIEW (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 7. An appeal to the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, that steps should be taken immediately to review both the numbers and occupations of women in the forces has been made by the council of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. In doing so, the council expressed the feeling that there was a wastage of man-power. While the review and combing out were being arranged, further enlistment should cease. Though perhaps few women had been taken from productive industries for the forces, they had been drawn from a general pool of labour which would otherwise have ‘ been available for industry. A resolution passed by the New Zealand Federation of Labour on the same subject expresses concern at the grave shortage of female workers in secondary industries and also asks the Government for an investigation into the utilisation of women in the forces.
