Mrs A. S. Moody has returned from a visit to Central Otago. Mrs Peter Wood will leave to-day for Wellington, where she will he the guest of Mrs R. B. Bannerman. Mrs K. H. Smyth, of Invercargill, came to Dunedin to attend the function for next-of-kin of Otago prisoners of war. held last night in the Concert Chamber. Miss P. Duncan will leave to-day for Wellington to attend a meeting of centre secretaries of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Members of the Cecilia Choir, at their practice on Friday night, stood for a minute in silence as a mark of remembrance to one of the members, Miss Blanche Dempster. Miss Sheila Calder, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. H. Calder, of Tennyson street, who for the past 18 months has been a member of Ivor Novello's " The Dancing Years ” Company at the Adelphi Theatre, London, recently accepted an engagement with E.N.S.A. in a company called "Lets Get Together," which is to be presented to the Allied forces in Africa. A meeting of the Dunedin French Club organised by Mrs B. Kerr was held at the Otago Girls’ High School on Monday of last week. An article, “ Impressions de Voyage et Description de la NouvelleCaledonie,” by M. Andre Brenac, the representative of General de Gaulle in Australia, was read by Mme. Bellugue, who also gave a humorous reading, and read a sketch with Mesdames Connor and M. Garden. The evening concluded with French conversation. The marriage took place on January 16, at Holy Trinity Church, South Shore, Blackpool, of Flying Officer John Herbert Davies, R.N.Z.A.F., eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. J. Davies, of Caversham. Dunedin, and Miss Frances Maureen Haywood, of Romford. Essex. A lovely display of blooms was arranged in the lounge of the Otago Women’s Club on Friday for the annual Winter Flower Show of "the Gardening Circle. The show is non-competitive, and each table had been arranged by an individual member to display the blooms from her garden. Some beautiful specimens were shown, and there was great variety in the flowers, which included roses, paripa violets, chrysanthemums, primroses, crocuses, snowdrops, clematis, geraniums, ixias, delphiniums, and carnations, all artistically arranged. The Mayoress, Mrs A. H. Allen, received the guests at the official opening yesterday afternoon of the Women’s War Services' Club in Stuart street. The lounge, which was attractively arranged, was decorated with bowls of chrysanthemums. Mr Allen, who declared the club open, said it was not intended to draw on the voluntary helpers who staffed the men’s service club to help at the women’s club. Several organisations and individuals had offered their services and the helpers would be in attendance from 2 p.m. till 9.45 p.m., and on Wednesdays and Fridays, till 11 p.m. Mrs Templeton is the chairman of the committee, which works under the direction of Mrs Allen. The annual general meeting of the St. Clair Croquet Club was held on Monday, when Mrs K. Webster presided. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs K. Webster vice-presidents, Mesdames H. A. Newall (re-elected) and M. Black; secretary, Mrs J. H. Stewart (re-elected); captain, Mrs H. A. Newall; sub-captain, Mrs R. Sewell: members of committee—Mesdames C. Baker, W. Speight, J. Moloney, D. S. Chisholm, R. Sewell, and Miss McDonald; Greens Committee, Mesdames C. Baker and W. Speight; Match Committee—Mesdames H. A. Newall, R. Sewell, and K. Webster; Social Committee—Mesdames D. S. Chisholm, J. Moloney, M. Black, and Miss McDonald; delegates to the association, Mesdames H. A. Newall and C. Baker. The speaker at the Travel Club meeting to-morrow will be Mr J. A. Peat. The tenth reunion of the Braemar House Ex-girls will be held on Friday in the Otago Pioneer Women’s Memorial Buildings.
