MAPLES BOMBED
HEAVY ATTACK ALLIED AIR OFFENSIVE POUNDING OF ITALIAN BASES (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, May 31. The air offensive against Italy « reached a new momentum yesterday, when Flying Fortresses made a heavy attack on Naples. Bombs were dropped on an aircraft factory and an airfield, and tremendous explosions occurred among oil storage installations. On Sunday night the inland airfield of Foggia, 80 miles north-east of Naples, was attacked. Aircraft on the ground were hit, and hangars were smashed. Following a : raid on Saturday night, Pantellaria was again attacked yesterday by Wellington medium bombers and fighter bombers. Targets in Sardinia were also bombed. During these latest operations 14 Axis aircraft were shot down for the loss of one Allied plane, the pilot of which is known to be safe. '
