I UNIVERSITY C.F.’S FINE DISPLAY MEDICAL BEATEN BY DUNEDIN The features of the Otago Rugby Football Union's senior competition, which was continued on Saturday, were the fine display given by University Combined Faculties A in the match against O.M.R. at Carisbrook, and the defeat c-f the University Medical side by Dunedin, which now occupies the leading position. The matches were played in fine weather, and the grounds were in good order. The results were as follows: University C.F. A 32. O.M.R. 14. Dunedin 11, University Medical 8. Air Force 16, Union 12. Kaikorai 14, Zingari-Richmond 5. SPECTACULAR EXHIBITION In a high-scoring match at Carisbrook University Combined Faculties A defeated O.M.R. by 32 points to 14 after providing the cleverest exhibition seen for some time past. The score was B—all at half time, but in the later stages of the second spell the superior pace, skill, and combination of the University backs proved the deciding factor. D. Murdoch, R. Elvidge, D. Wood, and N. Lino took part in some spectacular scoring movements, which gave the opposition little chance, although the service ‘team played bright football to the end. Tries for University were scored by Lino (3), Murdoch. Elvidge, N. Buckley, F. Mara, and R: Gordon. Murdoch and Hocken each converted two of the tries. The University forwards held the advantage in the scrums, and the pack was well led by Gordon, with Buckley and Mara giving good support. J. D. Revie and J. Gordon scored for 0.M.R., one try being converted by J. P. Mulholland. who also kicked two penalty goals. The forwards nlayed with plenty of dash in the loose, D. D. McKenzie, C. M. Weaver, and" J. Moody being the best. Revie and R. D. Jones were the pick of the backs. Mr J. Frood was the referee. , DUNEDIN BEATS UNIVERSITY MEDICAL In an evenly-contested game at the Caledonian Ground Dunedin defeated University Medical by 11 points to 6. The advantage throughout the match lay with the Dunedin forwards, who secured most of the ball from the line outs and scrums. The University back line was not at full strength owing to the absence of several of the regular players. The first try was scored by T. Wallace .Dunedin# and just before half time M. N. Paewai scored for University. On the resumption of play University took the initiative and were rewarded when T. Savage crossed the line. University continued to press, but were constantly pushed back by the Dunedin pack. A try by T. Moran, which was converted bv C.‘ McHerron, gave Dunedin the lead again, and just on time L. Connolly scored another try for Dunedin. Mr J. B. Burton was the referee. KAIKORAI DEFEATS ZINGARI Although marred by faulty handling, an evenly-contested match was witnessed at Bishopscourt, where Kaikorai defeated Zingari-Richmond by 14 points to 5. Zingari attacked strongly in the initial stages, and G. Barbara scored'its only try. which was converted by A. Alexander. For the remainder of the match Kaikorai, in spite of inaccurate passing, proved a little too strong for Zingari. and tries were scored by Irvine (2), Matheson, and Sim Burke converted one try. For Kaikorai, Manning, Grimshaw, and Matheson were prominent in attack, and Barnes did sterling work as full-back. Lunn and Irvine also played soundly. The Zingari half-back, L Barbara, gave a good account of himself, although he indulged too much in kicking to touch. Mr J. D. Fletcher was the referee. AIR FORCE WINS AGAIN In the match at the Air Force ground, Air Force defeated Union by 16 points to 12. Neither team settled down until the second half, and the only points scored in the first spell were from a penalty for Air Force by W. Saggers. In the early part of the second spell there were several bright back movements by Air Force, frqm one of which B. A. Taylor (centre) swung infield and scored near the posts. V. Gotlieb scored from a cross’-kick bv J. Whitmore (wing) by following up fast. Both tries were converted by Saggers, who also kicked another penalty goal. Healey kicked a penalty goal for Union, and the latter stages of the game were largely dominated by the Union forwards, who rallied strongly. A try was obtained by E. Paul after a' tussle on the Air Force line, and two further penalties were kicked by Healey. Mr C. McLay was the referee.
