WAIPIATA SANATORIUM
MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee was held in Dunedin recently, there being present: Messrs E. Macdonald (chairman), J."Rodman, S." A Stevens, W. C. Davis, T. Golden, J. H. Smith, W. Bryant, and A. T. Harris. The chairman referred to the death of Mr Jasper Clark, who had represented the South Otago Hospital Board on the committee from 1927 to 1930, and paid a tribute to his service. The medical superintendent (Dr A. Kidd) reported that during April 32 patients had been admitted, 40 were discharged, and 121 remained in the institution at the end of the month. The Director-general of Health (Dr M. H. Watt) advised that the position in regard to the supply of stainless steel had become so acute that its use for hospital and dental purposes would be restricted to sterilisers. The secretary reported that the average cost per occupied bed for the year ended March 31 last, was £167 12s, compared with £166 14s for the preceding year. It was reported that on May 24 last the associated boards had patients in the institution as follows: Southland 70, South Canterbury 26, Ashburton 14, Waitaki 9, South Otago 10, Vincent 4, Maniototo 3; a total of 136. Since the previous meeting, seven patients from four hospital districts had been discharged, and there was a waiting list of 12 patients from six districts. Statements of the committee’s receipts and payments for April showed that on April 30 there was a credit balance of £10,830 15s 4d, which includes an amount of £IO,OOO invested on fixed deposit for capital works not yet commenced.
