Acceptances for the second day of the Dunedin winter meeting are due to-mor-row. Unlucky horses at Wingatui on Saturday were Shadow Boy, Fair Trial, Merry Simon and Anglo French Benevolent and Feather Lassie had a chance of finishing in the money in the Tahuna Steeples when they fell at the final fence. Palfrey made up a lot of ground in the Birthday Handicap from the far turn to the home turn, but the effort left him without a finish. E. J. Ellis saddled up two winners in Gay Boa and Fairy Bard at Wingatui. Fairy Bard registered his third win in seven starts this season. W. Broughton had an unsuccessful trip to Wingatui, but was within an ace of a win on Cruden Bay, who came through with a good run on the rails. Broughton is not a stranger to Wingatui, as' he won the D.J.C. Handicap on Topere in 1931. R. Beale, on Valantua, was following Merry Simon and Anglo-French when they ran off. He states that there was no interference or boring to cause the horses to run off. The element of luck was attached to Gay Boa's win in the Otago Steeples, as it looked as if Merry Simon and AngloFrench would have had the . finish to themselves, bar accident.

Mr J. M. Samson’s colours have not been much to the fore at Wingatui, and Gold Nugget gave him his first win on the course for some considerable time. Gold Nugget paid over a “ score ’’ to win. Silver Mask stayed on better than usual when he won the Trial Stakes. He has always displayed a good turn of speed, but has failed to stay. He was got by Theio from Lady Artful, by Lord Quex. Silver Mask gave W. McEwan his first win as a trainer. Dark Olga, who paid over half a century in the General Freyberg Handicap, had not won a race since she scored in the Myross Hack Handicap at the Invercargill winter meeting of 1942. Perseverance broke a leg when he fell in the Brighton Handicap, and had to be destroyed. His rider, K. Wilson, had to stand down for the rest of the day and Platform, in consequence, was taken out of the Birthday Handicap. R. Register replaced Wilson on Prince Shad, and the fact that he had to put up 61b overweight sent the Paper Money gelding out of favour. Bashful Lady ran her best race over a mile and a-quarter when she beat them all bar Amorlad in the Birthday Handicap. The fact that she was meeting Amorlad on 231 b better terms than in the Riverton Cup showed what a task she had in the southern race. There is no doubt about the meritorious manner in which Amorlad strode home in the Birthday Handicap, as he won full of running. The only horse that might ha(re troubled him was Kevin, who made up a lot of ground ’ over the last half-mile;. . * Safe Light scored his first win in the Tahuna Steeples since the Tuapeka meeting of 1941. His owner, Mr T. Thompson, has not been a lucky owner; and it was a popular success. He was bred by the late Mr C. White and got by Rosenor —Mainlight, by Paladin—Spotlight, bv Nassau—Stardancer, by Martian, and no dcubt inherts the stamina displayed from his dam.
