NOTES ON THE RACING

The starters in the Tahuna Steeples thinned out during the progress of the race, and only four finished. Safe Light soon took charge, and led from Night Scout, Shadow Boy. and Feather Lassie. Ballyaggan and Maritimus fell early. At the stand Safe Light, Edward. Shadow Boy, Night Scout, and Feather Lassie were racing in fairly close order. Shadow Boy slipped and 'fell on the flat near the seven furlongs. Safe Light led along the back from Feather Lassie, Night Scout, Edward, and Benevolent, with Timber Topper a long way back. Benevolent and Feather Lassie dropped their riders at the last fence, arid Safe Light came on and won by six lengths from Edward, who beat Night Scout by the same margin. Timber Topper was the only other to finish.

Trial Stakes Fairy Godmother and Some Guy were slow away in the Trial Stakes. Silver Mask practically led from end to end and, outstaying Kiloney, won by three lengths. Eonnie Night was half a length away. Trapeze, Even Calm, and Manakore were next. Otago Hurdles Strip and Kippen set the early pace in the Otago Hurdles, but the former was pulled up after crossing the stand hurdle. Kippen led on from Taxpayer, Waitoru, and Colonel Rouge. Kippen was six lengths clear racing along the back from Taxpayer, Colonel Rouge and AngloIrish. Taxpayer joined Kippen at the second last hurdle, with Colonel Rouge closing up. Taxpayer led in the long run to the last hurdle, where Colonel Rouge got on terms. In a good finish Colonel Rouge beat Taxpayer by a head. Nightcalm drew up over the last halfmile and finished three lengths away. Heidelberg and Bow Street were next. Brighton Handicap In the Brighton Hack Handicap Fair Trial got badly away, and Miss Myra also dwelt. Riding Home and Royal Brief were first out from Wildfire, and they led round the far turn. Gold Nugget was moving up. Miss Myra fell and brought down Perseverance and Courtdress. Gold Nugget joined Riding Home after reaching the straight, and came on to win by two lengths from Riding Home, who beat Tring, fifth into the straight, by a short head. Royal Brief was fourth, with Wildfire, Fair Trial, and Saldowa next. Otago Steeples In the Otago Steeples, Merry Simon and Anglo French were piloting the way to Whirr when La Boca came down at the double. At the stand double Merry Simon and Anglo-French were together in front of Whirr, Gay Boa, and Master Dingle. Merry Simon and Anglo-French continued in charge from Valantua and Gay Boa, but the two first-named ran off at the second of the double. Valantua then led Gay Boa, and Whirr commenced to drop back, while Valens was improving his position. Gay Boa took charge at the water jump, and landing safely over the last fence, came on to win by four lengths from Valens, who beat Valantua by one length and a-half. Master Dingle and Whirr were next. Birthday Handicap Night Lancer took charge from Bashful Lady, Spanish Lad, Royal Chorus, and Arctic Dawn, with Kevin and Doubleack running last as they turned into the back. Night Lancer was still In charge from Bashful Lady at the far turn, and Palfrey was raced up into third place at the home turn. Bashful Lady went to the front at the turn and looked a winner, but Amorlad arrived with a strong run. and won comfortably by two lengths from Bashful Lady. Kevin came from the tail of the field and finished three lengths away. Spanish Lad was fourth, with Palfrey, Arctic Dawn, and St. Cloud next. General Freyberg Handicap Cruden Bay, Banco. Bali, Top Row, and Night Pal were smartest away in the General Freyberg Handicap. Fleet Street joined the leaders going up the rise and turned for home with Bali, Cruden Bay, Rawhamai, and Night Pal. Cruden Bay came through on the rails, and was in charge 50 yards from home, but Dark Olga flashed up and beat her by half a length. Princess Myosotis was a head away, just beating Night Pal, Fleet Street, and Top Row. Aldwortli Handicap From a snap start Georgia, Fairy Bard, Bright Form, and Pink Dart led out of the straight. Going into the back Bright Form and Pink Dart were in charge-from Fairy Bard. Once in the straight Fairy Bard ran to the front and won by two lengths from Boolamskee, with Paladeo a good third, followed by Irish Ruler, Royoney, Patria, and Bright Form.
