STEEPLES TO GAY BOA AMORLAD BEATS BASHFUL LADY The Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting was opened on Saturday in fine but cold weather. The attendance exceeded that of the opening day of last meeting. The course provided good going for the time of the year, and the card produced interesting racing and close finishes. Anglo-French and Merry Simon were clear of the opposition in the Otago Steeples when they ran off at the second jump of the double between the six and five furlong post. Amorlad scored his fourth win on end when he won,the Birthday Handicap in good style. Kevin shaped best of tire defeated lot, as he was giving the leaders a good start over the final halfmile. Dark Olga created a surprise when she got up in the last few strides to win the General Freyberg Handicap. The totalisator handled £49,357 10s, compared with £35,405 10s on the first day last year.
