BALCLUTHA Town Clerk Resigns.—At the meeting of the Balclulha Borough Council on Wednesday night the resignation of the town clerk, Mr A. L. Cameron, Was received with regret. Mr Cameron, who succeeded Mr Lothian in October last, has been appointed town clerk of Picton, and will take up his new' duties on May 8. Replying to the council’s expressions of regret at losing his services after such a short engagement, Mr Cameron said he fully appreciated the co-operation and kindness he had received from the Mayor and councillors. His action was dictated mainly by health reasons.

Sudden Death. A sudden death occurred at Balclutha on Thursday, when Mr Henry Robert Jewiss, school teacher at Tahakopa, expired while under an anaesthetic in the dental parlour of Mr G. H. Parkinson. Clyde street. The deceased had been staying with relatives in Balclutha. He was aged 37; and leaves a widow and two children. An inquest was held yesterday before Mr W. Roy, district coroner, when evidence was given by Dr Dodds (who had administered the anaesthetic) and Dr Frengley. Constable Griffiths conducted the inquiry on behalf of the police. The coroner returned a verdict that the cause of death was due to acute heart muscle failure in an early diseased heart. All the usual care in the administration of the anaesthetic had been taken. Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council was held on Wednesday night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. R. Copland) and Crs J. L. Gormack, W. Kean, James Wood, D. Lattimore, Ivan Jenkins, and Alex Renton. —It was resolved that the attention of the Transport Department be called to the number of motor vehicles failing to keep to the left, and to suggest that more severe action be taken in the case of breaches.—An application from the Balclutha Swimming Club for a grant of £2O was held over until the estimates have been considered.—R. R. Grigor wrote protesting against the request of Mrs G. Guest and Mrs Willyams for the removal of sycamore trees in Glasgow street. It was decided to take no action. —A communication was received from the superintendent of the Balclutha Fire Brigade, requesting that the licences of all halls used for public entertainment be endorsed to provide for the attendance of firemen at all functions. The council decided to agree to the request.—lt was decided to clean up the playing area at the Sports Ground It was resolved to prosecute the owners of cows which were found not under adequate control in the streets.
