RICCARTON NOTES
(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Apl. 30. There was an exceptionally thick fog here this morning, and it was fortunate that it came on an off morning. The horses who are to race to-morrow were on the track, but it was impossible to sep how any of them worked. Most of them, however, would be kept to easy tasks.
The Southland pair, Royal Lancer and Macedoine, were sent out to do useful work together. They are in good order for the Great Autumn Handicap.
With the prospect of a hard track, it is unlikely that the two-year-old Mike will be a starter to-morrow. Bashful Lady has been scratched for the Great Autumn, and also Military Maid, who is having an easy time on the roads for a few days. D. J. McDonald has leased Taxpayer to A McMuilan. The gelding cut one of his legs, above the knee, when he fell in the hurdle race last Monday, but it is not serious. McMuilan hopes to have him racing over hurdles at the Dunedin winter meeting. C. Emerson has not secured a rider for Eulogist in the Great Autumn Handicap, but he may get D. J. Thistoll. This rider was left without a mount when Sir Gundi was scratched, but he is in reserve for Little Secret, in case S. Green ■ cannot ride him at 7.4. The three-year-old Banco, who was third in the Papanui Handicap last Monday, was to have been offered at auction this morning, but he was not brought in from Riccarton.
Banco was sold to-day to C. C. McCarthy, acting for Mr H. Halliday, of Dunedin, for 575gns. Lord Nuffield and Lady Nuffield have developed leg troubles, and they may not fulfil their engagements to-morrow. The North Island hack Foxcatcher was not sent south this week. The sale of the late Mr E. Hay’s horses, which was held at Riccarton to-day, was a great success. Eight lots brought a total of 4465gn5.
