RAILWAY ENGINE-DRIVERS

CONCERN AT LONG HOURS OF WORK (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., Apl. 22. The Palmerston North branch of the Locomotive Engine-drivers, Firemen, and Cleaners’ Association has expressed concern at the long hours that members are being called upon to work and also at the inferior type of coal supplied. It was stated that the long hours, which included a percentage of night work, are having an ill-effect on the health of members, who view with concern the continuation of this practice. It is held that it must eventually lead to a break-down in the health of the majority of the workers concerned at a time when it is essential that the railway system should be maintained at the highest peak of efficiency.
