HOUSING SHORTAGE
ACUTE IN AUSTRALIA (N.Z.P.A. Special Aust. Correspondent) (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Apl. 22. The statement by the Minister for War Organisation, Mr J. G. Dedman. that if owners and tenants did not voluntarily share accommodation, compulsory billeting might become necessary in the metropolitan areas, has focused attention on the acute housing shortage existing throughout Australia. It has been officially estimated that after the war Australia will require to build 1000 homes a week. This estimate was announced by Sir Arthur Rickard, a leading figure in real estate circles. A shortage of 250,000 houses will have to be met throughout the Commonwealth.
