ATTACKED BY AIRCRAFT
ENEMY CONVOY OFF HOLLAND ONE VESSEL TORPEDOED (Rec. 7 p.m.) RUGBY, Apl. la. One medium-sized merchant vessel was torpedoed and other ships hit when a large enemy convoy was attacked by aircraft of Coastal Command off the Dutch coast this afternoon, says the Air Ministry News Service. Beaufighters carrying torpdoes were escorted by Spitfires of Fighter Command and Mustangs of Army Cooperation Command. The convoy consisted approximately of 15 vessels. One of the ships was hit by two torpedoes and was left on fire, listing.
One pilot commented that debris was blown almost 100 feet into the air, which was thick with aircraft and flak. The flak became fairly accurate after a while. The Spitfires, although enemy fighters were spotted in the distance, were not engaged. They stayed until the end and then escorted their charges safely back 'to base without loss.
