CONDITION OF TAXIS

CITY COUNCIL REPORTS The General Committee will report to the City Council at its meeting on Monday night that the chief traffic Inspector has advised the completion of the halfyearly inspection of taxi cabs, which reveals that, with a few exceptions, the vehicles are being kept in a very good state of repair and appearance. With respect to the exceptions referred to, action is being taken to ensure that these vehicles are put in a safe and satisfactory condition. During the month the number of vehicles tested at the station showed a slight increase over the number for the previous month. Of the 661 vehicles inspected, 107 were rejected on the first inspection. Carriage of Prams The Transport Committee will report that the transport manager (Mr W. H. Mackenzie) has advised that hooks have been attached to a combination tram tor the carriage of prams, and that they are proving very satisfactory. Authority has been granted to proceed, as opportunity offers, to fit similar hooks to all the combination cars, 18 in number. Works Authorised

Tlie Works Committee will report that the city engineer (Mr S. G. Scoular) has been authorised to act in the following matters:—(a) To renew the old stone culvert passing under Somerville street with a new 36-inch reinforced concrete pipe, at an estimated cost of £l7O, chargeable to the new maintenance vote for the current year. The present culvert Is defective, and a portion has collapsed under the line of the new sewer being laid in Somerville street by the Drainage Board (b) To carry out the work of priming the carriageway in Duncan street, at an estimated ccst of £125. Provision for this work is being made in the incoming year's estimates, but it is considered that the dust nuisance in the area warrants the immediate carrying out of the work.
