A MORTGAGE DEPARTMENT CANBERRA, Mar. 11. The Bill to establish a mortgage bank department of the Commonwealth Bank passed all stages in the House of Representatives after a Government amendment that loans should not exceed 70 per cent, of the security had been agreed to. The Bill, which is intende'd for tne assistance of primary producers, provides no interest maximum. The Federal Treasurer, Mr J. B. Chifley, said fluctuating interest rates prevented the fixing of a maximum.
