The annual meeting of the Racing Conference will be held on July 9. Nominations for the Waimate meeting are due on Monday. Acceptances for. the Oamaru meeting are due on Monday. H. N. Wiggins will be riding at Trentham. His mounts include Palora and Virtuoso. Royal Merit will probably be a hard-to-beat favourite for the Thompson Handicap. Scottish Dale has been a disappointment since she won in brilliant style at the Timaru spring meeting. , A repetition of that form would make her hard to beat in the Thompson Handicap. His wins in the Stewards’ Handicap and New Zealand Derby seemed to get to the bottom of Enrich, as his subsequent form proved disappointing. Last season he won once, and was five times placed in 20 starts. Enrich has done a little better this season, with four wins, and may help to make things interesting in the Thompson Handicap. The Wellington Challenge Stakes will probably be regarded as a “walk-over” for Kindergarten. Clarice may start in the Railway Handicap. Subadar, who has won twice, ran second with 9.2 to Royal Glory 8.6 at the Waikato meeting in lmin 14 l-ssec. Royal Glory is also engaged in the Challenge Stakes, and followed his win with another at Te Aroha with 9.1 in lmin 1 3-ssec. Merry May, who is top-weight in the Champion Hack Handicap, was a close third to Indian Princess and Nizam in the Great Northern Derby, beating Lord Chancellor, Rink, Royal Merit, and four others. In his last start Merry May 8.12 was beaten by a short length by Royal Merit 9.4 in the Hamilton Hack Cup, run in 2min 6 2-ssec. The Man’s Pal—Doretta filly Palora has won three times and has also run three seconds and a third in 11 starts this season. In her last win Palora 7.10 beat Neenah 9.0 by a length at the Wellington Cup meeting over six furlongs in lmin lllsec. She reads well treated in meeting him again on the same terms at a higher scale of weights. Those behind them at Trentham included Beau Vaals 8.10 (a close third), Poutatau 7.13. Whackie 8.7, and Pay Roll 7.8. The Ringmaster gelding Rink, who is second favourite for the Thompson Handicap, has won three times in nine starts this season. He won in hack company at the Wellington spring meeting with 7.8 in lmin 32fsec on a heavy track. His next win was in the New Zealand Derby, and he followed with a third in the Manawatu Cup with 7.11 to Yogi 8.5 and Good Scout 7.2. He was unplaced in his next two races, and in his last start won at Wellington in the January Handicap with 8.8 in lmin 40sec. The fact that Clarice went out to tackle Kindergarten at Taranaki at a difference of 121 b suggests that she is highly esteemed by her owner. She will have 51b less to carry in the Railway Handicap. Clarice has won five times and also finished a second and a third in 10 starts this season. Her last win was at Auckland in the Newmarket Handicap with 7.10 in lmin 11 3-ssec.

At the Avondale spring meeting in September Beau Vaals 7.10 beat Neenah 7.9 by three lengths on a holding track. Beau Vaals failed in his next two races

and then won the Railway Handicap at Auckland with 8.3 in lmin 12sec, • At the Wellington Cup meeting Beau Vaals 8.10 was third to Palora 7.10 and Neenah 9.9 in lmin Msec, with a length and a between them. On that form Beau Vaals is well treated in meeting Palora and Neenah on 91b better terms in the Railway Handicap, and should beat them at the weights. Soutane has grown in favour for the Railway Handicap. She has appeared only twice this season., and in her last start won at Woodville last month with 7.1,. in lmin Msec on soft going from Sir Bradbury 7.3 and Lady Acora 7.0. The unplaced lot included Autolite (who suffered interference at the turn by the winner) Kentucky 8.12, Caroline Bay 8.8. Black Robe 8.3, Pay Roll 7.6, Cheerful Lady 7.11, and Parlato 7.0, who are engaged in the Railway Handicap. Soutane won three times and was placed eight times last season in 18 starts. She was got by Leighon—Habit, by Thespian.
