UTILITY POULTRY CLUB

The Dunedin Utility Poultry Club held its first meeting for the 1943 season on Monday night. There was a good attendance.

It was " question night,” and readings were also given from journals. Many questions were answered by Mr W. L. Jourdain (Government poultry instructor), Mr C. Bartley, Mr C. McKenzie, and Mr E. P. Anderson. Among the questions asked were: What is the correct measure of mash and grain for a few hens? What causes feather-eating, particularly the main tail feathers, among young growing stock? What causes the purple feathers in black fowls? With regard to the feeding of a few domestic fowls, Mr Jourdain said the birds should have enough to keep them feeding for 20 minutes. The tail feathers in young birds were often pulled out by older birds if they were run together, or could be caused bv overcrowding, lack of salt, lack of roughage in diet, poor ventilation, or mischief. Mr Jourdain said he had found that a paste made from blacklead and eucalyptus was very effective if put on birds which were subject to attack. Tlie purple feathers were caused through feedipg too much yellow grain, although the selection of the breeding pen could be a contributing factor. Mr G. Hall read an interesting item from an American magazine on the feed- I ing of poultry, and this was the subject of j a discussion. Mr E. P. Anderson thanked j the speakers.
