THE FOOD SITUATION
SHORTAGES IN AMERICA NEW YORK, Dec. 26. The Government has disclosed that an unusually important announcement will be made to-morrcw on the food situation, directly affecting every family in America. The New York Times understands that the rationing of all canned goods throughout America will be announced. Residents of New York are coming to grips with more shortages, particularly butter and fuel oil. Most shops are entirely without butter, and many large hotel and apartment houses are unable to furnish heat because of the lack of fuel. . A Governmental review of food shipments in 1942 tells housewives why they are confronted with many shortages, and explains that shipments for the troops and lend-lease have included 8,440,0001 bof butter, 107.000,0001 bof dried eggs, 408,000,0001 b of evaporated condensed milk, and 2,560,0001 b of meat. Furthermore, the soldier eats 51b of food a day, compared with the average civilian's 41b.
